November Round-Up: My 8 Favourite Things
1. The Skimm newsletter – http://www.theskimm.com/
The Skimm is a short, interesting summary of the news sent to you via email. I honestly look forward to my Skimm email every single day. I feel up-to-date on current news and it is written in a really great way. Props to the Skimm writers for being hilarious.
2. Lush Parsley Porridge Soap- http://www.lushusa.com/Parsley-Porridge/05197,en_US,pd.html
This soap is actually meant for your body, but I love it as a face wash! The parsley has anti-bacterial properties and the oats act as a nice, soft exfoliant. I use it every morning and every night, spritz my face with this guy: http://www.lushusa.com/Breath-of-Fresh-Air/02359,en_US,pd.html and then massage my face with coconut oil.
3. Carob Powder (aka chocolate caramel)
My Grandmother is an angel. She is honestly the most loving, caring human being you will ever meet. Ever since moving to Berlin, I miss her like crazy, even though she is one the people I keep in touch with most. She wanted to support my “healthy eating” and gave me some $$ to buy some special food products that I was missing oh, so much! I splurged on some chia seeds and fresh medjool dates, and then ran into this little guy- carob powder! Um, YUM. Why did nobody ever mention that carob powder tastes like chocolate and caramel?! It’s delish in smoothies, especially this one.
4. Beets. And My Beet Root Lunch Salad Recipe
This is a salad recipe I have been making for lunch almost every single day. It’s convenient to keep the ingredients at work and whip up in just under 5 minutes. Here’s how to make it:
What you’ll need:
1 steamed red beet
5 large handfuls of mixed organic greens
1/4 cup crushed walnuts
1 avocado, cubed
1/4 cup goat’s feta cheese
Optional but recommended: sauerkraut, sproats
Dressing: honey, balsamic, olive oil, salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice.
How to assemble:
Chop up the beet in very small cubes and mix all of the ingredients together. Combine the dressing and toss. Enjoy!
5. Green Kitchen Stories – http://www.greenkitchenstories.com/
I had heard of Green Kitchen Stories before, but had never really taken the time to look through their recipes. I am so incredibly thankful that I did, because I to be honest, I have fallen completely in love with the recipes, lifestyle and photography. Everything David & Luise (and Elsa! Yes, her name is Elsa.) create is simply beautiful.
6. My Mom’s Blundstones from the 90’s – http://www.blundstone.com/international-products/style-550
I have been wearing these for a while. I sort of “borrowed” them from my mom 2 years ago (sorry, Mom…) and they are the best all-around shoe. I can wear them hiking, walking, hanging-out and even to work! (but only in Berlin…) I don’t really want to accept the fact that they are getting a little old, so I’m hanging on to them for as long as I can.
7. Goura Pakora, Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany – http://www.goura-pakora.de/
Vegan Indian Food. Um, yes please? Not only is this adorable/hip/fresh restaurant vegan and gluten-free, but it’s also incredibly delicious. One of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. The portion sizes are huge, but you will leave feeling amazing, since everything is made fresh by the awesome staff who work there. The price is totally affordable; one dish is about 6-9 euros, which can easily feed 2 people. I recommend anything and everything, but the wraps and the sharing platters really made me happy.
8. Bread
I gave up almost all bread (minus the occasional gluten-free loaf) about 2 years ago. I have felt amazing ever since and never really felt the need/want to eat it. Until I came to Germany. Germany is most famous for their pumpernickle and the bretzel, but they are so much more than that. Everything is incredibly fresh and baked with love. On the Turkish farmers market, I often find myself picking up a loaf of gluten-free Buckwheat bread for the week. It’s just so darn delicious! I am hoping to bring some delicious home-made bread recipes back to Vancouver with me.
