How Can a Holistic Nutrition Professional Help Clear Your Acne?

the pure life

SHARE

If you struggle with acne, you’ve likely spent hundreds (or maybe even thousands!?) of dollars on skincare and treatments to clear your acne. While I do take a well rounded approach to clearing acne, meaning I address skin issues from multiple angles, I think it’s important to consider working with a holistic nutrition professional. Here’s why.

First of all…

What is a Holistic Nutrition Professional?

I personally studied at The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition to become a Registered Holistic Nutritionist™. Our role as Holistic Nutrition Professionals is to work with clients on a holistic level, meaning we address health from many different avenues – science, ancient health wisdom, healthy cooking, mind-body-spirit connection and more. Registered Holistic Nutrition professionals have undergone training at CSNN to support people on their unique health journeys.

This blog post is in partnership with The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, where I studied to become a Holistic Nutrition Professional. All opinions are my own. Thank you to CSNN for sponsoring this post and truly changing my life forever.

What Causes Acne?

When you work with a Holistic Nutrition Professional such as myself, our role is to find the root cause of your acne. Acne doesn’t just happen, it is linked to an inner (or sometimes outer) imbalance and needs to be addressed in order to make long-term changes for your skin.

Acne is technically derived from the bacteria P.acnes but chronic and cystic acne is actually much more complex than we initially believed it to be. New research shows that maintaining a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin actually helps to fight acne. This is why it’s important to avoid harsh skincare products that might disrupt your skin’s natural biome and barrier.

Here are a few common imbalances I often see with my clients experiencing acne:

  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Post-pill syndrome
  • Hormonal fluctuations due to stress
  • Imbalanced blood sugar
  • Sluggish digestion and/or detoxification issues

Other symptoms that I often see alongside acne:

  • Fatigue/exhaustion
  • Brain fog
  • Bloating and constipation or diarrhea
  • Anxiety
  • Cravings
  • PMS issues/irregular periods

How Does a Holistic Nutrition Professional Help Clear Acne?

Instead of taking a “bandaid approach” to healing acne, I am here to support you for long-term change. If you’ve taken oral medication for acne, you may find that your acne will simply return a few months later. Ever wonder why? This is because medication doesn’t actually address the root cause of your acne. In most cases I’ve seen, it can actually make your acne worse! This is known as a “bandaid fix”.

Common “bandaid fixes” people use for acne:

  • Harsh topical skincare products
  • Internal medication
  • Cosmetic treatments like laser therapy, light therapy, microdermabrasion, micro-needling, etc.

Note that none of the above actually addresses the root cause of your acne, which means your acne is highly likely to come back if the imbalance is not addressed.

My approach to acne is unique. Since I focus on acne as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist™, I support my clients from all angles.

These are the areas we focus on when we work together:

  • Finding the root cause of your acne
  • The science behind acne and how your other symptoms are connected
  • Focusing on digestion & gut health (yep, these are connected to skin health!)
  • Addressing hormonal imbalance pre, during or post hormonal birth control
  • Looking at detox pathways and whether or not yours are functioning well
  • Skincare and lifestyle changes to support your skin and fight acne
  • Skin biome and barrier health
  • Mindset and mental health around acne
  • And so much more

Can Studying Holistic Nutrition Help Clear My Acne?

I enrolled in holistic nutrition school when I was struggling with the worst acne of my life. I became fascinated with healing my own skin issues from a holistic perspective and felt incredibly supported in my classes at CSNN. If you’ve been thinking about pursuing a career in holistic nutrition and you’re struggling with acne, I honestly couldn’t think of a better time to enrol in their virtual program! When studying holistic nutrition, I went through massive changes in my life in the most beautiful way and truly think every person should take this course no matter if they want to pursue a career in nutrition or not.
